Our Future – September 29, 2024

This AI-generated photo raised a lot of controversy a few weeks ago.  After the presidential debate on September 10th, Taylor Swift very publicly announced her endorsement for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.  This photo was a major catalyst in her decision.  It was generated by AI to reflect a view that Taylor Swift does not hold.

With the exponential advancement of our technology, many “unforeseen” problems are arising.  A good way to sum this up is “As technology develops, it becomes more powerful, cheaper, and more widely accessible. This is often highly beneficial, but it also means we are rapidly disseminating technology with dangerous, exponentially advancing applications.” (CHT, Chapter 2).  People are becoming more and more creative with what they are using Artificial Intelligence for.  Back in 2019, a YouTube video was posted that appeared to be the world’s leaders singing a rendition of “Imagine” by John Lennon.  It looked alarmingly real.  However, it was not.  In just five short years, the ability to make computer generated images look real has increased tenfold.

While what artificial intelligence is being used for cannot necessarily be regulated, there should be ways for it to be easily identified.  If there is a statute put into place regarding AI generations relating to politics, countries, etc., this problem might not be as widespread.

However, with AI constantly evolving, it is hard for humans to keep up at this point.  In practice of this, the AI would have to regulate the AI, which might not be the best idea.

This is the price we pay for introducing this monster of a thing into our world and letting it infiltrate practically every aspect of human lives.  It takes real people fighting against it and saying this isn’t right for something to truly be done.  Maybe even for us to realize that if this isn’t already a serious problem, it one day, very soon, could be.
