Reading & Writing
- The Bare Bones Camera Course for Film and Video Chapter 5
- Sound is caused by vibrations, which create waves. When these waves hit our eardrums, they are converted into nerve impulses which tell our brains what we are actually hearing. Microphones work similarly, but instead of being turned into nerve impulses, they are converted to electrical signals.
- The waves can be different sizes and different intervals. How close the intervals are is called frequency and the size of the waves are called amplitude. This is how “loud” the sounds are. These are measured in decibels. Frequencies are measured in Hertz. The larger this number is, the higher pitched the sound is.
- There are two types of microphones: dynamic and electret condenser. The main difference between the two is that in a dynamic microphone the electrical currents are created by moving wire inside of a magnet. In a electret condenser, there is only one capacitor. There are also two ways that microphones can pick up sound: omnidirectional or directional. Omnidirectional microphones take in sound from all directions while directional need to be pointed specifically at the sound.

- “How to Write an Invisible Script”
- Some sort of script should be written for podcast episodes. While they will most likely not be perfect representations of the production, like film or television, they can act more as bullet points for the episode. Creating scripts for podcasts can help establish the structure, keep the episode flowing, gives a path, and make producing more efficient.
- Invisible podcast scripts are so well tuned that the listener can’t tell that there is a script most of the time. The key points to make a successful invisible script are: to map it out (using common script points), embrace the narrative perspective, and write in a conversational tone. A test that can determine if your podcast is authentic is to ask your friend if they can recognize you.
- “Podcast Scripting: How Do I Write a Podcast Script?”
- There are many ways to create a script for a podcast, word for word or completely ad-libbed. The spectrum between the two is a wide range. Scripts that are written verbatim can be a good starting point, but can usually sound monotonous and take a long time to write. These can be very useful for shorter podcasts or ads that are straight to the point.
- Another option is to create a detailed outline for the episode. They allow for a more conversational flow but can sometimes be hard to follow in the moment. The key to this is to start with a few bullet points and then flush them out for more detailed talking points.
- The last option is to have a very rudimentary bullet point list. They are the most versatile but the main talking points can be lost easily. Whichever method is chosen, there are ways to make them work efficiently, effectively and successfully.
- “Hooks, Taglines, and the Power of Words”
- The most important aspect is making sure your podcast is memorable. One of the most effective ways to do that is to use a catchy tagline, hook or slogan. Taglines can range from only a couple words to a full sentence. They should be what the audience remembers if nothing else. They should introduce the host and describe what the podcast is about. Hooks are repeated segments or phrases unique to the podcast.

- “Tools for Podcast Planning Perfection”
- In this day and age, podcasts have become accessible for almost anyone to create. No experience necessary. If you are confident in what you are doing, the rest will come easily. There are many tools to help the most novice podcasters become successful.
- “How to Present a Perfectly Scripted Podcast”
- The shorter and more to the point the script for a podcast is, the more room there is to branch out. Don’t worry about what other people might think about you, be yourself. Breathing is important in order to calm your nerves and not sound as shaky as you might be feeling. If interviewing someone, make sure there are some questions prepared and ensure that the topic does not get strayed.
Research to Inform
These are podcasts that I have enjoy listening to. They captivate me (even if some episodes can be long). I also favor them because they are hosted by women.
- Call Her Daddy
- https://open.spotify.com/show/7bnjJ7Va1nM07Um4Od55dW?si=bf6db08a7776425f
- I have listened to quite of few of these episodes. I like her style of interviews because she uses cards to guide the conversation but allows it to flow how it may. She brings a lot of high-profile guests on but doesn’t let that cloud what point she is trying to take away from the conversation.
- Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce
- https://open.spotify.com/show/0RgXbSGGmwpzAyeLHbDqUD?si=7faf5921d53d4ca8
- I appreciate her authenticity and allowing for mistakes, slip-ups, etc. She is very unapologetic about what is said and talked about.
- Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast
- https://open.spotify.com/show/3WmfuCfP71p9m7nM30ZIMn?si=8a38fe70dd8348b2
- I was very excited when this got announced. The hosts are inexperienced, in the podcast realm, but still engage their listeners because they are popular.
Create
While completing this template, I started getting excited about actually starting and creating this podcast. I chose it because SVU has been my latest obsession the past year or so. I wrote my 2,100 word paper for ICM 506 on it as well. It is so broad that something can easily be focused on to do a project on.
